Security Screen Door Grades
There are three main security screen door grades: Safety, Barrier, and Security. Safety grade screens typically use a single lock and are designed as a basic physical obstacle. Barrier grade screens generally utilize a triple lock system, significantly enhancing security compared to the Safety grade. Security grade offers the highest level of security, often using a high-quality triple lock system from a reputable brand like Lockwood.
Single Locks
Single lock doors have one central locking point. While they allow for keyless locking from the inside, a key is required for both locking and unlocking from the outside. Single locks are generally considered suitable for Safety grade screen doors.
Triple Locks
Triple lock doors, as the name suggests, lock at three points on the door frame: top, bottom, and center. This system activates simultaneously when the main lock is engaged, providing a higher level of security compared to single lock systems. Although generally more expensive, triple locks are the preferred choice for Barrier and Security grade screen doors.
Common Security Door Lock Brands & Features
Whitco and Lockwood are two popular brands for security screen door locks in Australia. The Whitco Leichardt, known for its reliability, is a common choice for sliding security doors. This lock features an “anti-friction catch” designed to reduce wear on the lock and latch mechanism. The cylinder is easily removable with a single screw, but only when the key is turned, adding an extra security measure.
The Lockwood 8653 and Lockwood 8654 are other popular choices for sliding and hinged security doors respectively. These locks feature DualSelect® technology, offering two-stage key locking. This allows users to choose between a “safety” lock mode, enabling easy exit from the inside, and a “secure” lock mode, requiring a key for both internal and external unlocking. Both models also have the option for a three-point locking kit for enhanced security.
Installation and Troubleshooting
Whether installing a single or triple lock system, ensuring proper installation and functionality is crucial.
●
Before installing the lock on the door jamb, it’s recommended to test the locking mechanism in an open door position to understand its operation and feel.
●
When marking and cutting the strike plate holes on the door jamb, ensure there’s enough depth and clearance for the locking tongues to fully engage. Any restriction can lead to jamming or malfunctioning of the lock.
●
Regularly test the locking mechanism in both open and closed positions to ensure consistent feel, sound, and action, indicating a properly functioning lock.
By understanding the different grades, types, and features of security screen door locks, and following proper installation procedures, you can choose the right lock to enhance the security of your home.
