Lock Bumping

Lock Bumping

Lock Bumping is a technique that has been know to locksmiths since the invention of the Pin Tumbler lock.

While it is not a new technique, it became known to the general public through the spread of media and the internet.

It uses a special key cut to the deepest cuts. The key is bumped with a bump hammer or other object. As the key is bumped the pins are pushed up to the shear line. If the pins get perfectly aligned, the lock will open.

Lock bumping leaves no visible sign that your lock has been opened. There are no crowbar marks, footprints on your door, it is a covert opening technique.

Is Lock Bumping still a threat?

Yes and no. Many locks in Brisbane can still be bumped open, this is true. Although locksmiths and the public have known about this threat for long enough that they should have taken precautions.

Every one by now has heard of lock bumping in the news or through social media. Even if you have never heard of Lock Bumping, your locksmith should have informed you of the potential risk when they installed your locks or changed your locks. There is really no excuse for people and businesses to be using locks that can be bumped open. It is now a choice every person has to live in a world secure from lock bumping or to live in denial or a world where they do not care about the security threat.

Anti bump locks

Lockwood Australia, Whitco and other manufacturers has taken the threat seriously and now most of their retail and commercial locks come standard with Kinetic Defence lock cylinders. These lock cylinders use special spool pins in the top chamber of the lock cylinder. These spool pins make lock bumping almost impossible. It also makes lock picking quite hard as well.

A restricted key system such as Lockwood Gen6 is also a way to prevent lock bumping. Using a restricted key, makes it hard for thieves to make the bump key in the first place as they can not acquire the key blank used to make the bump key. Using a restricted key in conjunction with a Kinetic Defence lock cylinder makes it near impossible to bump open a lock.

Other high security lock cylinders also offer resistance to lock bumping.

The Lock mob locksmiths recommend you do not use standard lock cylinders on your house or business. Upgrade to a lock cylinder that can withstand this simple attack. It is just not worth the risk to leave your security to chance.
