How to fit an entrance knob lock

If you are fitting a knob set lock to a new door, there are 12 steps you will need to take. They will ensure your entrance lock will work without any problems.

The 12 steps to fit a tiebolt knob lockset:

  1. Mark the position of the two holes in the door. The lock should be fitted around 1000mm from the floor level. The large hole-saw hole and the hole in the edge of the door are first marked.
  2. Drill the large hole using a hole-saw. This is the main hole on the side of the door. The two knobs will be fitted over this hole.
  3. Drill the hole in the edge of the door. This is the hole that the latch is fitted into.
  4. Mark out the the latch rebate.
  5. Chisel out the latch rebate. and install the latch using the two wood screws to hold the latch in place.
  6. Install the lock onto the door. The lock is held on by two screws on the inside of the door.
  7. Mark The strike centre on the door.
  8. Drill the strike hole with a spade bit. This is where the latch enters into.
  9. Trace the outline of the strike. Making sure it is in the correct position.
  10. Chisel out the strike rebate.
  11. Install the strike. Use the two wood screws to screw it onto the frame.
  12. Check the lock function. Make sure the lock is functioning correctly.

Following these steps will help with your knob lock installation. Always do the final check to make sure the lock is in good working order.

Position the lock on the door

When fitting a knob lock, first work out what height from the floor you want the lock fitted. Most entrance locks are fitted around the 1 meter from the floor.

Mark the position of the two holes you need to make on the door. There is usually a template provided with the lock. A square is helpful for accurate measurement.

Holesaw cut for the knobs

The hole saw is used to make a large hole in the side of the door. This cut accommodates the inside and outside knob that attach over this cutout. The knobs have parts that protrude into this hole cutout.

Most tiebolt locks have an adjustable latch. It can be fitted at either 60mm or 70mm. Make sure to fit your lock at the correct backset length.

Spade bit cut for latch

Use a drill and spadebit to make the hole in the edge of the door. This hole is centred with the holesaw cut hole. It is also centred in the middle of the door.

Drill all the way through into the large holesaw cut hole.

Installing the latch

The latch is the first piece to be installed onto the door.

The cutout for the latch is marked onto the door. It can be marked with a pencil. Then using a chisel, the recess for the latch faceplate is made. The latch sits flush with the door edge.

Screw the latch to the door with the supplied screws.
